Daniel Lanois and Heavy Sun Continue Their Zebulon Orbit

Harmonizing with Daniel Lanois

This past Tuesday, I attended Daniel Lanois and Heavy Sun’s residence at Zebulon for the third week in a row. Lanois and co are currently prepping for a West Coast tour, and are using the front room of the Atwater Village cafe club as a public rehearsal space. Read my initial write-up here. If you’re local to L.A., be sure to get your tickets for their May 14th show at the Theatre at Ace Hotel.

This week, it seemed word of the event was spreading, as the room was jammed to capacity. The band was due to go on at 10 pm, and when I arrived early at 9:15, it was already standing room only.

Lanois Performing Sonho Dourado

One of my favorite moments from each session is when Lanois performs Sonho Dourado on pedal steel. The original recorded performance was on guitar, and it was used in the climactic moments of the Friday Night Lights feature film soundtrack. (There is also an early demo version of Sonho that is included as a bonus track on Lanois’ Acadie: Goldtop Edition album reissue.)

Carolina Cerisola Performing with Heavy Sun

A new surprise this week was when Carolina Cerisola took the stage to dance with the band. The crowd was particularly thick and active during that moment, so I was unable to get a picture. Here instead are some shots of her performing with Heavy Sun a few months back at Amoeba Records in Hollywood.

Lanois and Heavy Sun will be hitting the road soon, so be sure to check out the dates on Lanois’ Facebook page. Again, if you are local to Los Angeles, be sure to catch them at the Theatre at Ace Hotel on May 14th.

The Heavy Sun lineup:

Daniel Lanois: vocals, guitar, pedal steel

Jim Wilson: bass, vocals

Rocco DeLucca: guitar, lap steel, vocals

Johnny Shepherd: Hammond B3, vocals

Happy listening, DangerKatts!
